WD-40 is "okay" but it doesn't have a "cling" factor. 99% of what you spray onto the engine will run off actually leaving surfaces unprotected. It also isn't very good for the soft components (seals etc.) as it tends to attack polymers.
WD is fine to use as a pre-assembly cleaner bit it is NOT a lube no matter what their propaganda would lead you to believe.
There are silicone sprays available in gun shops which do an excellent job.
Machine shop guys usually don't let their projects sit around for a couple of months before re-assembly as you are doing.
