W114 engine ticking (continues)

Hi,

The hunt for the ticking M130 engine continues.
i have isolated to the back top portion of the engine.
i have removed the 4 rockers for the last 2 cylinders (will remove the rest next week) and they almost look brand new to me. no signs of wear or abuse.

no signs of wear on the top metal portion of the valves either, same with the camshaft.
i did expect to see wear like some of the pictures posted by Luna but nothing so far. I'm puzzled, this hunt is taking way too long.

I will mention something else.
I did see wear on the valve cover towers, i did notice this before but i corrected it and I "believe" is from before. i made sure the cover is aligned properly and doesn't touch the camshaft.

Is it possible that when i tighten the cover bolts the towers lean and touch the camshaft causing the ticking?
can it be that simple?
it doesn't tick cold, only when it gets hot.

and at the end it is not the rockers or the camshaft what else can cause this ticking to check before i remove the head?

Further update:
I removed all rockers and no signs of wear anywhere not even surface scratch all looks like new
I couldn't unbolt the chain sprocket bolt so I haven't inspected the camshaft yet

I also looked in the valve cover and found wear in there at three places
It looks like the valve cover sits lower than it should and it is touching the camshaft loves
So when cold it is not touching and the minute the engine and components get hot they expand and touch the valve cover.
Could it be that simple and all this time the towers to be causing this issue?

Once I inspect the camshaft and if I don't find any wear I will order new towers and gasket

Any thoughts?

gotta say i think the cover tower are your problem. they look really messed up.. there has to be metal fillings somewhere. have you seen any? how old is your cover gasket?

i think there is a torque spec for the cover bolts, have u found it?

I did change the oil recently and find few shavings in the oil filter

I would love to see another set of towers to see how off are mine
Gasket is few months old but because of the towers being messed up it got pinched on one side
Also the copper washers are pretty much gone.

As for the torque specs I was not being able to find what they should be.

Thanks to Luna I can now see how off is the third tower
I have ordered three new towers gaskets and copper washers to see if that rectifies the wear on the towers and valve cover

Your always welcome, I'm glad to help out where I can. It's nice with both of us working on similar issues right now, and it was easy for me to just trace the outline of my valve cover brackets and PDF them to you. My parts should be in by the end of this week, hopefully I'll be able to start getting things back together.

I really hope that your ticking problem is as simple as replacing that rear bracket.

Does anyone know what are the torque specs for the chain sprocket bolt and the valve cover bolts.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Drum roll please,
After replacing the towers, new gasket and copper washers the noise is
STILL THERE
What a disappointment
I can't figure out where this ticking is coming from
On cold start the engine sounds amazing with no funny noises
The once it gets hot it is ticking on over run as you decelerate and metallic ticking sounds at 80 to 100 km/h once steady and downhill for example no ticking
Power is all there, camshaft bearings and everything else looks like new with no wear

What next
I'm frustrated

Can some attachments to the engine ( has pump, oil pump or anything else might be causing this)

Ticking happens on overrun and when I increase the rpms quickly

I hear a sort of knocking sound about 1/2 thru video, is that the noise?

what is your idle rpm, sounds fast, can u put a box over the carbs to muffle the sound from there?

also for fun take cover off and make sure ur not hitting towers again.
