low grill 280se coupe 6 cyl vs. a 3.5 transplant

I have a '70 280 se low grill coupe that I just picked up. Car has a bad head gasket as a best case scenario Maybe worse. Not sure yet.

Thinking of maybe a 3.5 transplant. I have found 2 350 sl's with 4 speeds.

Has anyone taken out the 6 and put in a 3.5 4 speed? Worth doing? Any major problems or red flags?

It would be great to have a 3.5 4 speed coupe. I am pretty sure they did make the 3.5 coupe with 4 speed from the factory.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The 3.5 111 manual transmission driveshaft is different. It is a 3 piece unit with 2 center bearings.

Good score!
Search also for threads with 'Frankenbenz 450' in it, as I have put a 450 V8 into my W111 sedan. It is definitely do-able and proves a nicer driving experience than the 6, but there is more to it than just plonking the 8 in the engine bay. Things like: handbrake cable route, exhaust around the steering box, engine mount arms, throttle linkage, wiring, possibly the fuel pump. And you will need to find a diff from a V8 W108 to get a numerically lower ratio.
Also search for a thread called something like 'W111-108-113 mods' as it has some good stuff in it.
I am a fence sitter as to whether it is worth it - my current coupe project is a 250SE that is taking the standard driveline, then the next one is either an E55 AMG or M119 from a 500SL into a W112 coupe.
Good luck, Drew

Suggest Re-do the inline 130 6 engine .well regarded for reliability and longevity.
May not be a good idea chopping ,altering bits here and there to fit a 3.5 engine in a coupe and It will not have the feel of the original car .

I am doing a overhaul on the 3.5 engine from my 300sel 3.5 . the injection system with trigger points, a two stage tps and very expensive injectors and other fueling parts are a negative point. It was a comparatively primitive first generation D injection system.
