Start with this: at a dead stop on flat ground put the car in the "2" or "L" position. Then floor it. Did it start in a lower gear than usual and then abruptly shift into second? It should have started in 1st (since you were in the L position AND floored it) and abruptly shifted into 2nd, then 3rd, then 4th. These are high-revving cars. I would put even money on your car transmission working correctly, just different from what you are used to.
