You can bypass the cooler without any immediate effects - I did the same thing until the rad shop finished mine (repairable, thankfully). Just be sure to watch the coolant temps.
Any other oil cooler can be used as a suitable replacement, either after market, or something from a domestic setup (you can also substitute with a transmission or power steering fluid cooler). Any cooler, whether a radiator, oil cooler, tranny cooler, or heater core, is nothing more than a heat exchanger. I recommend you take the old one to Napa, Kraegan, Western Auto, AutoZone, etc, and see if they have a generic. Ask about fitting adapters too, if the connections are a bit different.
Bigger isn't necessarily better (it might not fit), but slightly smaller is ok.
