HELP - Would you buy this 1977 350SL?

Hi all,

I have lined up a 1977 350Sl to buy here in New Zealand and the lady has just sent me the warrant of fitness report sheet.

It's a good price - $12,000 NZD.

Only things noted are:

Rust developing on left hand A pillar
Surface corrosion on boot and underbody areas

If anyone out there could let me know what you think that would be great and much appreciated.

Thank you for your help.

Alan

post over at the R107 forum, those guys will give you the help you need. there is a guide to all you need to know sticky at the top.

These cars are notorious for body rust. If you see rust expect serious rust hidden elsewhere. It can eat a lot of metal.

Rusty A-pillar on an SL sounds worrisome, that's what keeps your head on in a roll over. As already suggested if you can check how much and how widespread the rust is, just surface or more sinister, then you will be in a better position to make a decision. Did the shop that wrote the report offer an opinion of the rust severity?
Also, be sure it is not a flood damaged car having rust in some of those other places you mentioned.

Personally I never buy a car with rust but that's maybe easier said here in the US west coast than it is there for you, so if it;s not terminal and you can attend to it, and if this is a hard to find dream car for you, then give it a go!

Thank you both - appreciate you taking the time to reply.

The seller has said that the guy who did the report has said that none of the rust is a problem at this time.

For peace of mind I'll get an independent report done during the week.
