Ahhhhhhhhhhhh yes. Why keep an underpowered, underwhelming (ok, "gutless") Mercedes inline 6, when you can put in an AMG'd V8? Or a Chevy small block? Or a respectable Windsor? Why, Benzophiles, why?
Because the older 6 cylinders were, in a word, gutless. I can say this from experience and without shame.
I absolutely LOVE the looks of the older Benzes, but hate the power. It's why I despise anything but modern diesels. Something so gorgeous should have the guts to get out of its own way, to rule the left lane, and to leave competitors breathless with envy.
In 2002, I test drove a new C280 - it was a nice enough car, but didn't have the power of the Hyundai I'd eventually buy. The salesman, sensing my disgust, told me that most of the customers for this particular model were older gentlemen who enjoyed a good cruise on long open roads. Young guys like me, who were more likely to floor it at a stop light, or race it in town, were looking for an AMG (I sold the Hyundai for a BMW Z4 and still bemoan the Mercedes lack of power in the older models).
If I won the lotto or had stupid amounts of $$ to toss around, I'd DEFINATELY buy something like this restomod!
