W111 rear view mirror

I wanted to know if anyone knows how to remove the rear view mirror? I am trying to take out the wood and the mirror seems to be in the way.

The mirror base is held in place by a small cone shaped bit on each side that is compressed and held in place by a spring within. You need to grasp the mirror base firmly and then push or pull the mirror sharply until it pops out. Yes, it will seem like you are breaking something but this is how it's made, you will see this clearly once removed. You are correct that it should come out before you remove the wood. Also, it is a bit harder to put back once you're finished but on mine I greased the spring and end buttons and then worked them in and out a few times by squeezing with a pair of pliers to make it move more freely (it's a strong spring). Also, wrap the mirror and base with a towel if you decide to push it towards the glass just in case it hits the windshield when you are forcing it out.

I am attaching a link from my site that shows the mirror components well. You may want to review the tutorial anyway to see if there's any work you can do while it's off the car.

there is a silver rectangular base screwed to the roof sill. The mirror sits inside it with the abovementioned sprong & balls. While pulling it off you can PRISE between the mirror & the silver rectangular. Remember to pull the anvil (thats strong enuff... dont put presurre on the mirror swiveling part
