I have the same K&N filter setup, and I have never smelled any gasoline from the engine or the rear of the car. This is my current setup with a smaller hose going from the vacuum into a larger hose (sealed with Permatex black sealant) then into the valve cover breather. At first, I just had a breather cap and it was getting oil vapor on everything, so that is the main reason that I went with this setup. Even when I had the breather cap installed and the vacuum between the carbs plugged, I still never smelled any gasoline. When I do remove the gas tank filler cap, there is a vacuum that is released. I can also hear some fuel movement in the "expansion" tank that is located in the trunk when I remove the cap.
My main problem with the car is the strong smell of a rich exhaust, mostly after a cold startup. I have leaned out the idle mixture screws to the point where it helps with the smell, but then it will idle a little rough and wont start on the first crank. (the idle mixture screws are currently about 1 1/2 turns out) So I guess I will have to just live with the smell. My A/C needs some work, so on a hot day, we will have the windows down and the exhaust smell just gets sucked right into the cabin. I wondered about installing a CAT, but I don't want to lose any power.
