Saw this ad for a 1966 Fintail 230
It doesn't look too bad, but I think it has been sitting since 1990!!
The rust does not seem out of control, although that one rear fender is a bit of a worry.
Body wise my main concern would be rust in the trunk and the floors/undercarriage.
I imagine it would need a boatload of parts including brakes, clutch(?) exhaust, anything made of rubber (seals, mounts, hoses etc.)
The interior appears to be ok from what I can see.
Hopefully the engine is salvageable. The transmission linkage seems like it may be a concern?
I would think that both engine and trans would have to work with minimum $$ invested to make any kind of restoration worthwhile
I have an email into the seller so I can ask him more questions and get more pictures.
I dont know these cars at all, what are some questions that I should be asking the owner?
The car is about 4 hours away, so its a bit tough to take a look at it.
Most of the work would be DYI including body work and paint. Things like carb overhauls kinda scare me though.
Not looking for a show car, just a nice looking, safe Sunday cruiser.
I would hate to see another old Benz go to the scrap yard.
So, here is what the ad says and the pictures
BTW asking price is $350 but it has been for sale since June
1966 Mercedes VIN number is 11001110004652. Engine turns over and will run if float bowls filled. Has in-line 6 cyl. engine with dual carbs. Has gas tank/fuel pump issues. Floor shifter has come disconnected somewhere as the shifter flops around, not moving anything in the trans. Been sitting a lot of years and I am tired of mowing around it, so it has to go. Selling for scrap price, but lots of good parts. Glass is all good, with the exception of the windshield which has a few small chips. Arizona car, was driven up in 1990. Have Arizona title and customs declaration papers. I don't believe it was ever licensed in Canada
