1973 Mercedes 450SE deal or no deal?
I have the chance to purchase a '73 450 SE from an estate sale. The owner passed away and the kids are selling everything off.
No rust at all, does need a front right headlight casing (?) replaced and a minor dent to the fender there. Kid bumped into something moving the car and did just enough to break the clear casing, turn signal light housing and small dent to the fender.
Asking price is $1200. and it does run, though rough. They think it is a comp issue but took for a test drive and stopped to check the cap and rotor. corrosion on wires, also corrosion inside on the contacts and the part that is pushed out with a spring that sets on top of the rotor is missing. Also pulled a wire and it didn't change the idle a bit, same with a second, the rest did. New cap, rotor, wire and plugs should take care of the rough running. (tried switching the 2 wires and no change)
The only other experience I have with Mercedes is the '64 220S and a '78 280 I had in Germany for a couple of years.
I think I can get it under $1000. Chrome is nice and clean, paint is good with some minor defects. Moon roof and windows all work great.
Deal or no deal?
