1968 Mercedes 280SL W113 Convertible top question

I am looking at purchasing a 68 280SL. I am in AZ and the car is out of state so I had the seller take the car to a Mercedes specialty shop for an inspection before I bought the car. For the most part everything checked out ok on the car but I asked the shop if they could take the hartop off to see underneath and they seller refused to allow them to take the top off. I have a friend that is in the area where the car is for sale and tried to arrange with the seller for him to come see the softop and what is inside the deck lid. He refused. I told him I am not interested in the car without finding this out. He calls me a couple days later and says a very knowledgeable Mercedes guy came and looked at it and said the car is a very rare "California Edition" and did not come with the softop underneath. The seller mentioned they took the top off and because the car has the small jump seats in the back that there was no softop or even a deck lid that opens. The seller is extremely insistent that this car came that way.
I feel I am very knowledgeable in the older SL's but did I miss something? Did Mercedes really make some without softops and no opening deck lids?

Known as a "California Coupe", this is a hard top convertible. That simply means there is no soft top nor is there a frame, only the removable hardtop.

Having researched one of these I was considering buying about 10 years ago, I can also tell you that the hardware and fittings to retrofit a soft top to this car aren't there. In other words, you can't add a soft top to this car. The bits required aren't there.

Considering that the seller sounded deceptive, I would run away from this like your hair was on fire. Also, if you do some research on this car you'll find that the values on these are typically well below that of their "true" convertible cousins.
