Exclamation **Major Problem**

Hey Guys,

My 240D (1978) will not start unless I spray starter fluid. Its been like that for two months now and I've tried starting car w/o using the fluid but it keeps draining the battery. What should I do?

You are living VERY dangerously spraying starter fluid into your diesel. You could very easily blow up a prechamber. Get it diagnosed and fixed and start using WD40 as your starting fluid now. It is safer. When is the last time you had a valve adjustment?

The major problem may be the fact that common maintenance practices have been and are being ignored, particularly on over 35 year old car.

Sokoloff,

Ok thanks. Ummm Im not sure when the car had a valve adjustment. The car was my graduation gift (class of 2012) and I never had any problems until sometime in April 2013. Its been in the family since my grand dad bought it off the lot and he does most of the repairs. I will ask him and get back to you. Thanks for the tip on using WD40 instead of starter fluid!

DeutscheFahrer,

Well it has been sitting in the garage for a number of years. My Ant was the last one to drive it before me back in 2000 to like 2004, I believe. But I doubt that would be the problem cause my "gd" inspects the car every other weekend or I do. He buys new parts and have one of the mechanics at the shop he owns install them, if needed. oil change, brake pads nd units, trans fluid, all that....lol... I do start nd let the 240 run for a few mins each day. I remember him saying he bought new parts before he gave it to me last June (2012), and to let him know if anything was wrong. I'm thinking it could be the battery, since it is the only used part in the car. From talking with my Aunt about it, she never had this problem while she was driving it. So idk what it could be.
