Post w108 new owner

After a year search I finally found a w108 that was worth the asking price. I picked up a 1971 280S for $1200. It needs some work for sure. The interior as a whole is in great shape. Seats, dashboard, door panels, carpet, and steering wheel are in good shape. Although it could use some good cleaning. Outside there is the usual small amounts of rust at the lower section of the door but no more than surface rust. The front bumper seems to be the biggest issue. Driver side bumper mounting bracket needs replacement along with lower radiator support. Nothing a welder cant handle. As far as the m130 engine...the car has been sitting for 12+ years so the cylinders are locked up. Hopefully some marvel mystery oil sitting in there for a week or so will free them up. If not its disassembly time. There is no fuel in the fuel tank although it will need a cleaning before use. The car came with a box of parts including 2 zenith carb rebuild kits. Previous owner plugged off lines from mechanical fuel pump and installed an electric fuel pump with regulator. Its very noisey and wont be staying on the car...Im guessing the mechanical pump is no good so I will replace it. Brakes and suspension seem ok but will need the safety check before a road test. All interior and exterior lights work, windshield wipers work, power windows work, and ignition switch works. Combination switch and horn will need attention though.

I definitely have a project ahead of me. As a Mercedes master tech I mostly work on 1990-present cars. I own 2 w124's also. This w108 is my oldest venture into Mercedes classics. I ordered the MB classic centers service manual and also found 3 service manuals inside the car. Hopefully with all that info and all you fine people on this forum, I can get this classic back on the road.

Looking forward to the project and being a vintage Benz owner!

What a beauty! Congratulations! Nice find with mbtex seats, they stand the test of time so well. Wish my interior was as good as that, the original leather in mine is starting to look a little droopy. These cars were built so well, I'm sure the engine will free up in no time. Your car reminds me of mine in so many ways. A year's time of hard work has been worth it, just got back from an awesome drive with the old girl. So rewarding. All of the best with your endeavor. Keep us posted, she is indeed a beauty.

Thanks! I'm excited to get working on it. I've already got the cylinders soaking and have parts coming from Germany to start fixing the rust issues. There is still a boat load of parts available for these cars in Germany. I've had my parts guy at the dealer I work at check about 2 dozen part numbers on just body panels and structure pieces and they are all still available and fair priced(atleast at my employee cost ). Some in the states and some in Germany.

The car came with 2 zenith carb rebuild kits so that's on my list of things to do. Also removing the fuel tank and having it cleaned and tested. Some new lines and a new pump and the fuel system will be ready.

Interior as you can see is in pretty good shape. Needs a combination switch and some minor cosmetic touch ups but that's really it until I decide to do a full restore on it.

In a years time I plan on getting a lot done as I look forward to driving this classic again. It's been stuffed in a barn for 12+ years and needs its legs stretched.

As I work on it I'll post pics of the progress.
