W111 turn signal issues

The signals on my fintail are being weird...has been doing it off and on for years, but lately is worse. I think the blinker regulator or whatever the silver cylinder on the firewall is called is dying. For some years, every now and then the signals would act up - blinking at inconsistent rates, too dim, etc - but then would turn around and work normal. Today I removed the cylinder, cleaned the plug, plugged it back in - worked for a few minutes, now is weird again, sometimes not working at all.

Is there anything else that could be wrong, and is this part easy to come by/interchangeable with others?

Sometimes it's the actual column switch . In my case a few soft taps on the silver cylinder under the dash , near the steering column, did the trick...Here's one on Ebay....You may be able to get it cheaper if you search around but for reference...

Thanks. Just wanted to know if the issues could be caused by the "blinkgeber". My car also does have some switch issues - moving the stalk to different positions provides varying results. I guess after 50 years, some of this stuff needs to be cleaned and adjusted

I also found this on ebay, which is identical to my part and the number on it. I don't know if my car would reject the non-German organ transplant, however
