My Dad had an identical switch installed (not factory). In his case it ran the electric antenna up and down. He had it and the electric antenna installed after he had 3 broken off in the course of a few months.

I'm not sure when MB started making automatic antenna standard but I don't think it was '74. The radio may have been replaced and most new radios have wiring to run the antenna built in.

My guess anyway.

It could be anything really, maybe trace the wires to a general area which will be a bit easier if you can see the color, and also non-factory wiring may not be routed as cleanly helping you to trace it. Silly question, but have you flipped it to see if you hear any noises or lights coming on outside? It could be for fog lights that were removed, possibilities are endless.
Welcome BTW and congrats on your car.

That really doesn't look factory. I've seen those type switches used for various things from electrical antennas to ignition immobilizers to additional fog lights. You might want to look at the wires, to see if they are the same type as the factory uses.
