dog dish hub cap question

I like the looks of the oem hubcaps on the older cars and as such i have no desire to go with an aftermarket wheel for my w108. however, i am due for new tires as i wore out the current ones to the treadbars.

With that said, i wouldnt mind trying to change it up a little. I like the clean understated look of the dog dish style center caps that do not cover the full wheel. how did mb attach these to the steel wheel? I imagine clips, yet not having access to a wheel w/ this style hub cap is making it hard to visualize.

in addition, would my stock steel wheel have the provisions to mount said clips? as the full wheel cover style attaches more toward the rim lip via tabs on the hub cap. i wouldn't think a oem would change a steel wheel design just for hub cap mating purposes.

thanks in advance

If your steel wheels have "slits" for air venting, they will probably accommodate dog dish caps. The center area has raised ears that the caps snap onto. However by 1972 is it unlikely that you will have those wheels. If your wheels have "holes" for venting, then the dog dish caps won't work, or more importantly, the beauty trim rings that go with the dog dishes won't work because they look dreadful bisecting the vent holes of the wheel.

If you type in "how do dog dishes mount to the wheel" on Google images the first pic explains it pretty good

I have them on my 67 w108. They fit on as mentioned with nubs. I also have the caps that cover the whole wheel. I like the moons a bit more. I plan on adding beauty rings and period correct white walls in the future.
Note my caps are stripped of paint and are in dailydriver condition.
