1966 W111coupe windscreen wipers

Hi
I am having problems with the wipers on my car it is a barn find which is under restoration and I am just working on the electrics.
I don't have a hand book of any sort so I am not really sure how the wiper switch should work.

The switch is on the end of the indicator stalk.
When I got the car the wiper motor was disconnected when I connect the multi pin plug the wipers operate (with the ignition on) and I can't switch them off, if I press the end of the indicator stalk they stop wherever they are at that time, when I release the spring loaded switch they start again.

Is there an on / off switch somewhere that I am overlooking?

I assume the small rocker type switch on the indicator stalk is to select different speeds.

Any advice appreciated

look under hood , there is a wipper relay , it makes noise when it turns on , this could be your problem . the rocker switch is 2 speed
