'79 450SL High/Low Idle

Tried using the search function and looking through the board first, but could not find anything to help. I apologize if this question has been covered ad nauseum.

I have a '79 450SL I bought a few years back. Runs well and is in largely good shape. Have changed out the plugs and wires, replaced some vacuum hoses, minor tune up stuff, etc. The issue I can't seem to solve is the idle RPM. When warm, it idles at around 500 in gear, should be 750, and in park around 1200. I've tried adjusting the idle screw, but it doesn't seem to do anything either way. The previous owner had it maxed out tight (clockwise).

Can anyone offer up some tips to triage this issue and get the idle back in line?

Thanks!

You might want to go over to the 107 forum. There a lot of people that can help. There is a sticky topic called the encyclopedia germanica v107 that has a huge load of info on a lot of topics.

Thanks for the help. That's what I was afraid of. Any suggestions on anything to try first prior to replacing this part? It's pretty expensive and would hate for this to turn out to not be the culprit.
