Can't get therostat/water pumo housing in

On my 71 220D I cannot get the screws to go in all of the way until they stop.

What am I doing wrong? I have lined them up I don't think they are stripped.

Also there is a coolant breather hose. Is this necessary or can I do without it.

All thoughts are appreciated.

Are all the screws the same length? Perhaps you are trying to put a long screw in a hole that wants a short screw...
