w115 wheel options

Hello all, I've got a 76' 300D with the 14" steel wheels and I'd like to bump it up to a 15" or 16" inch wheel on account 14" tires are getting quite difficult to get where I live. I was wondering what other MB wheels would fit this car. I got a set of the standard issue alloy wheels off a w124 bout an 88 model they fit the rear fine but won't clear the tie rods on the front. Any suggestions on what will fit?

Man, that is my burning question. What is the widest we can put without rubbing? I am thinking 18's.

15" bundts could be your solution. Another is to get 15" steelies to mount the vintage 15" hubcaps from the 600.

Would a small wheel spacer fix your clearance issue?

Uh uh. There are 15" x 5.5" wheels that were for 114/115/123 special duty cars, chassis, etc. (Ambulance for instance). These are available new from Mercedes. The 15" corresponding hubcaps are probably also available. The 600 wheels and hubcaps are a different (and expensive) animal.

I guess I have to ask if it is really that difficult to get 14" tires. I have no problem getting them. On-line is cheap and easy and I expect it will be for another 20 years. Maybe I'm wrong. If I'm wrong then I'm in trouble as I have a lot invested in 14" steel and pressed aluminum rims....
