Mybe a 1978 280ce?

I'm going to test drive a '95 420e tomorrow, but this '78 280ce just caught my eye as well so i made a call on it...

The current owner inherited it from her father (orig owner), it reads 88k on the odometer, all presentable inside and out, apparently service records are available at the same shop (MB specialists) that is selling the 420e I'm going to drive tomorrow. at $1450 I'm a little skeptical, but it seems like it would be worth checking out (I do like those coupes). Wondering what I should look for in terms of throttle response (should it be quick off the line?), known issues with this model, etc.
Again I'm not yet well versed in the lore of MB, so any feedback here is a godsend. Thank you.

Oh, and BTW, what kind of grille is that? looks a little different than i've seen before.

There appears to be rust along the belt line on that car, check it thoroughly under the carpets and pads, in trunk, etc. The grill is fabricated, probably got dented when a truck backed into it and just made one up to fit. Original is easy to find and install. You can even buy the individual little chrome strips new from the Classic Center once you buy the plastic center. Buy a hood star, they are cheap at the dealer or online, $23-40. The wheels are not original, try to get them with the car as well as anything they took off from it. I only drove the diesel version which was very slow. I could probably lay a brick on the throttle 5-mins before I was ready to leave and still catch up with the car by the time I finish my coffee.

Hey thanks for the reply... I went down to the service center to see those "records" and the guy told me "yeeeeaaah... We saw it once... it's a rat, stay away from that car," so I'm gonna take a pass on this one

OTH, since the warning to "stay away" comes from the shop trying to sell you the other car, it may be worth taking a look at the 280. If it looks & drives OK, have it checked by a good indie tech. Prestige Auto Repair just West of the airport, on 19th off of McGilchrest has a good reputation and will give you an honest assessment of the car. (or are they the shop selling the 420e?? If so, have German Auto on 12th check the car) Don
