76' w115 ignition help!! :)

Hey guys n girls.
I'm after some advice,
I had to replace the steering lock/ ignition barrel on my merc now I'm having trouble aligning the black box/ ignition switch back up to the new barrel, I've tried many different positions on the black box, then mate it back with the barrel, turn the key, n all I get it power to the car, no engine ignition :/
Anybody have a solution or suggestion on this to keep my hair from falling out ??

How did the actual barrel assembly "key" look? This is the part which engages the ignition switch. I just replaced my '72 W114's barrel assembly because the engaging tab (key) had disintegrated and was no longer engaging properly.

Does the key spring back from the "start" position or is it just a dead feel?

You say "engine ignition", do you mean no power to the ignition or no power to the start circuit? Use a test light to check for power at the coil.

Hey Mike.
The ignition switch has the usual wiring behind it, n on the front it's got the same thing as u explained that u recently replaced, I can start the car the "illegal" way by black boxing it, but when trying to line the switch with the barrel it don't start?? The key in the barrel turns all the way to the "start" position, n yes springs back a lil as it should, but it's kinda like the key isn't goin far enough to get the engine to kick :/

Oh and by "engine ignition", I mean, I turn the key, I get power to the can, all the electrics, but turning they key further to start the car, n it goes no further, the starter motor don't budge

I'm guessing you tried starting in neutral and moving the shifter to different positions?

If so. then you are going to have to pull the lock cylinder barrel and switch out so you can see what the problem is. Might be something as simple as a loose wire on the back of the switch.

Is this a diesel?

It doesn't have the useless "seat belt interlock" on it by any chance?

Its a petrol engine.I've had it started before, in neutral, without the seatbelt clipped in so I won't e that, had to start it the old car thief way lol, it's a resto project so I've got the time look a bit deeper into the problem, you've given me a few good pointers in what to sus out tho thanx mike. Always helps to be given a different perspective.

the ignition switch [ electrical part ] , removed from the sterring lock body , with a screw driver , can you start car , remember , you must turn all away off in order to crank again , it is a non repeatable switch .
