The problem with used is they are as old as the ones we are trying to replace - they may be in better condition (hopefully) but they don't have another 40 years in them - and maybe not even 4 once you start using them.
It has frustrated me more than once that there is often no replacement part or upgrade listed. Often an upgrade is possible if you can figure it out (like using an electric pump here) but sometimes they look ugly - or maybe not ugly but far from stock (like a radio with bluetooth).
My current dilemma is my steering wheel - I have the newer style rubberized one ('73 220D - apparently the year they changed from hard plastic). I have found new ones for ~$600 (ouch!) used ones are hard to find and vary in price and condition. A used one in excellent condition is several hundred anyway. A new one I know what I'm getting. Then again some black duct tape is probably under a dollar (OK not that ).
I ought to post the electric circuit I did to my washer pump - it was easy except for the one connection I had to solder on my back looking up at the pump area.
