76' 300D speedometer cable

Hello all, trying to get the speedo working in my w115 300D it has a two peice speedometer cable cable coming up from trans to cabin then there is a sensor screwed into it and another short speedo cable going out the other side of it and up to the cluster, unhooked the short cable and was able to test the cluster so that cable and the cluser is good. Whats that odd sensor for? and I'm pretty shure that either the long cable is broken or the gear is stripped inside the transmission. Is there anything special about the long cable or can I use a universal one in its place? I know that its got a crimp clamp at the transmission I was gona buy a universal one and take the actual cable out and slip it into the origonal sleeve. Any info would help!

The sensor was to have a speed signal for the cruise control. Both speedo cables are still available new from MB, they are not very expensive (€22 and €35 in Europe).

if the cruise control is dead , just replace with a one piece cable .
