Is there any fixes out there for the cracked steering wheels on the W111s

Aside from buying a new one, no. An alternative is to take it off and fill the cracks with epoxy. Once hardened, grind it down to match the rest of the wheel, and repaint the whole thing. Easiest when done with the wheel off the steering column.

What kind of paint might you recommend to prevent peeling?

Take a quick gander at the POR15 site. They have an article covering the repair of cracked steering wheels. Their water based epoxy is also too cool to believe. Talk about ease of use!
