190sl restoration or not?
Newbie here. I've had some mercedes in the past and am looking to add a couple to my life right now. I need some advise from those of you with experience with these cars. Figure this is the best place to ask.
Some back ground first. Through a mutual friend I have the opportunity to buy 2 1957 190sl's. They are ROUGH! Actually 2 1/2, there is a complete front clip included as well. Together the cars will add up to one mostly complete rolling shell. They both have clean titles, there is 1 1/2 full suspension between the lot, all usable body parts besides a nose panel and hood. The doors and trunk lid look really nice, there are fixable front and rear fenders, the floors actually look decent, the frames are ok, can be repaired nicely. There are no interior parts, and very little bright work. Actually I think the only chrome there, is one pair of straight bumpers. There are no engines, no transmissions, and no lights. The cars inner fenders and trunks are rusty, they show their age.
One car was "restored" at some point to make it drivable, one car was a vintage home brewed street racer. It looks as though these were both used as parts cars a long time ago and these are the remains.
The price for the package is very low. Looking at the restorable cars listed throughout the web, what I can buy these for is 1/5-1/8 the cost of the other's asking prices. I can see the potential there, especially considering they both have clean titles. I am a BMW master tech, and self taught fabricator. I am not talented enough, or wealthy enough to turn these into concours cars, but I think I can make a very nice vintage styled racer/driver. I will do everything on my own, farming out the absolute bare minimum.
Am I nuts? Will I be wasting my time with this? I am not looking at making a profit, I'm not even thinking about the resale yet. I am simply trying to decide whether or not its worth the time to try to bring a 190sl back to life. Thanks in advance.
