I have a '70 280S, same colors even, and it also smokes. As you describe your issue you may get away with just replacing the valve seals. I had this done on mine, reduced the smoke but still not acceptable to me. next step would be valve guides or a rebuilt head.

California likes to assign VINs to imported cars that differ from the actual VIN. If they did that, there should be a plate riveted to the body where it shows the CA-issued VIN.

VINs were standardized in 1981, so it's not going be a 17-character number anyway.

Good luck getting the registration sorted out!

When was the fuel filter replaced? Have the injectors been checked as well? Valve guides and seals?

Finally!!! I got it titled in AZ after three trips to DMV and hours of time. I am driving it legally for the first time. I have a 30-day temp. tag, so I need to get it smoged (wish me luck, it smokes pretty bad on hard acceleration). Then, when it passes, I can get a real plate and roll.

I think it is running rich, so I will try to lean it out a bit. It was at sea level when I bought it and we are around 2700 feet here, any issue?

Sounds like the valve guides and seals need replacement. Otherwise it's bad piston rings.

I surely hope it is not rings... It had old gas in it when I got it, but I have been through two tanks of fresh fuel + one can of Lucas injector cleaner... still smokes, but does seem better.

Sadly, as expected, it failed smog this AM. The hydrocarbons (HC) in pp, were 1062 Precondition (standard is 380). Final reading was 670 (I think for idle and the standard is 450). The Carbon Monoxide (CO) in % was 5.99 and 6.95, but the standard is 5.0. The precondition CO was 11.49 and the standard is 3.00. I think the precondition is when you hold it at 30 MPH on the "dyno" looking thing... I had a very hard time holding it at 30 MPH, so I was in and out of the throttle a lot - which I predict made it worse.

Any ideas?
