White vs. Black Steering Wheel

Good day,

I'm an old member that is just returning to the BW forum. I've started actively searching for a W111 or W112 coupe to buy. I've seen coupes with both a black and white steering wheel. Why the difference? Is it a model year thing or possibility for better color coordination with the interiors? Also, I've read some comments about the 250 engines being noisier and less refined than the 220 or 300's. Is there any truth to that?

I'm thinking it has more to do with the year plus color combo.... Contact the classic center and inquire.

I never considered that, please share if you find the answer. Mine has white for reference.

On the cars I've owned, the white steering wheels are noted as options on the invoices/ factory build cards (available by request from classic center)

A 300SE is a completely different animal than a 220 or 250. If you want a W111 coupe and can afford one, a late 3.5 V8 lowgrill is the most refined driver. A 300SE is expensive to put right but a joy once there. A 280 or 250 is a great driver. Most of the sunroofs and power windows are found in 250s but that's not a rule.

good luck!

They were an option in 73. I had a beautiful 73 280 sedan, white exterior/blue leather interior with a white wheel and have seen an identical color combo 280 with black wheel and the blue vinyl interior. Looked like this one (not mine) Both had the 110 six cylinder engine, automatic trans with the big knob column shifter but I have also seen a 73 with automatic and a floor shifter with the ugly but safer, later style wheel seen throughout the later 70's and 80's.

My 73 280 sedan is sporting the white steering wheel to go with the parchment interior. Also has the floor mounted automatic shifter.

That's just beautiful, I'm guessing the White steering wheel is more sought after. I personally like it more than the black one, it just adds more class. I have one on my 200 but I have to find a way to restore it cuz it has some cracks and has lost its shine a bit.

I always thought it was odd that the shifter knob wasn't white as well. This is a 67 w108.
