Parts/service for a 1978 240D?

I initially posted on this sight about lusting after a 1978 240D for sale for $3000. It has about 230k miles and the body and interior are good. A couple of mechanics I talked to (that have not seen the car) said that I may have trouble getting parts for a car this old.

I am sure this is a common question, but how difficult is it really to get MB parts and service for this year and model? I am sure it depends on the particular part and problem, but, in general, will it be a constant challenge that will drive me into an early grave?

Thank you

It depends on where you are located. MB still sells new parts for this model, but some parts are No Longer Available. The older the car gets, the more parts will be NLA.

The 1978 240D is the W123 model, which is the most-popular model Mercedes-Benz of all times, which means that the junkyards are full of them and a lot of second-hand parts are available, but if you live in an area with few MBs, than sourcing second-hand parts may be more difficult.

Other manufacturers (other than MB) still make parts too, because a lot of these W123s are still about.

Service also depends on where you live.

Do you need the car every day? or are you planning to own it as a classic? Because it is an old car, you will have to wait for parts sometimes.

Not challenging at all...
