Have you considered the M111 4 cylinder as installed in the E & C230 cars for US markets? I did a quick check on car-part.com and came up with a whole mess of them for very reasonable prices ($250 to $800). Then again, there is the supercharged 2.3 as in the CLK230 Roadsters.

You must consider the limitations of your car's (very advanced for the time) suspension and brakes. The M180 is not only too long/ wide/ big, but is also a great heavy chunk of cast iron that will overwhelm the cars engineering.

Perhaps you could find yourself on the auction notification lists for insurance company disposals. There must be enough affluent young ladies in Texas, banging up their CLK230 cars, for some to pop up at auction. Buy the entire car for cheap and start the conversion. Where I live, Mercedes Benz cars go for bargains at the salvage auctions compared to Japanese and domestic vehicles. The market for second hand MB parts is very tight.

The M111 is gonna be a super tight fit. The dimensions I'm working with really eliminates even some of the common 4-cylinder choices.

I wasn't considering the M180, it was just mentioned because it was the I6 of the time that went into the W187, not the W136.

I'm looking around to see what comes up locally, I'd rather not have to deal with shipping of a car/motor/trans if at all possible.

Anyone have experience with these windows? I'm not tracking how they're supposed to stay in place. The others are far too rusted together for me to really see how they work.

Too rusted to see. Wow. Please send us an image. You may be accommodating some late model regulators into your early doors. Be very careful with the latch mechanisms and cranks as there is a lot of pot metal in there that will crumble.

Check the link at Neimoeller for an exploded view (of a W187 but yours is similar). Front doors | MB 220 Chasis 187001 spare parts

The windows tracks on side rails bolted in the door. The window bottom in pressed into the rail on the regulator. I have attached images from the RF & LR doors on my W187.

Neimoeller does have some parts and even if not shown, an email may surprise you as to what they do have. Some stuff is unobtainium.
