Best of luck to you and keep us posted with your progress....more important, show us the final result, if only the exterior.
Well, I have a black car already, and the 500SE will most likely make a transition to a darker color.

If parts will still being made for this car (there's a nice market for someone to capitalize on, but I rest my case), I'd go all original in a heartbeat. But to source all original parts is not cost-effective, nor something that would happen in a short period of time. I would estimate it to take several years to find everything that's in good shape and not off some donor on its last legs.

Manual gearbox is a must, that's why I'm not going for an M117 V8 of any flavor.

The exterior will come last, I just want to see the car drive on its own again!

ETA: I appreciate the links.

I attended all four years there.

My passion was influenced from birth

I've also attended Mannheim Elementary, Mark Twain Elementary (in Heidelberg), and Wurzburg Elementary and Middle School before making my transition to H.H. Arnold (they changed the named officially to WHS in 2008), but we still called it H.H. Arnold.

170S here ?

What a pleasant surprise to find this thread here.

I have not read all posts so forgive me if I am repeating others' comments.

First of, it would be wise to keep the car cosmetically and technically original just for the simple reason of resale value.
As market tendencies go your best return/resale value would be Europe, especially Germany.
The car could however never (or should I say near impossible or only under serious time investment and red tape battles with German bureaucrat Red Tape) register the car.

Having said that, of course the car can be built any which way,for fun, but it could just not be permanently registered as a "H plate" (meaning historical use and original configuration specifications....)

But I am sure you knew all that.
To build for fun , the sky is the limit here in the US.
I would however suggest that the body would be restored stock and a mild modification would be practical and possibly reversible.

As for paint color.
Again original would keep the value of the car high.

If you need help with original dartacard/ specifications and/or color code I could possibly be of assistance, if you need it.

Looks like a great project,if you can get it going....

Alex

See, I couldn't bring myself to tear apart one of these to give life to another if I know both could live.

I have no attachments to a Nissan, so ripping parts out of one won't hurt me one bit.

Taking from another Benz that under the right care could have a second shot at life makes me want to cry.
It's like you're speaking from my soul.
I have dozens of Mercedes, but no 170.
I have to warn you, it gets miserable if you try to save them all........(ask me how I know)

The parts supplier only cover some basic wear parts

I afraid that you will have to look for donar engine and gearbox from other 170!

I think this needs to be stated in big, bold letters:

I have no intention of ever selling the vehicle to anyone.

So, resale value is somewhat irrelevant.

You gotta love the panic that a basket case car isnt being restored back to factory original
It would make sense if you were modding a complete car in pristine condition or something super rare or desirable
But its a bread and butter car in the kind of condition that most people would use it for parts or send it for scrap
Id rather see it live on as a Frankenstein then cease to exist
Even if you restore it it still wont have matching numbers
And at least with a Modern engine it will be a reliable daily driver
If it were my project I would keep it looking derelict and just do the work required to get it drivable

Joe, thank you for seeing my reasoning! Though I'm not about to leave it Derelict, even if that was the new style influenced by Zoolander (lol).

I agree with VaiFanatic, if the car is not going to be for sale then he can pretty much do as he pleases with it. Brings to mind my son's '54 Caddy, he's restoring the body, no chopping, shaving, or anything else but the driveline, brakes, and suspension will be late model GM for reliability as a daily driver but it will LOOK as it did when new

Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints
My Stable:
'91 560SEC
'91 300SE (sold)
'98 Yota RAV4
'02 S-10 Truck
'72 SeaBird boat, overhaul on hold
