1971 280SEL -Need advice before I buy
Today I discovered a 1971 280SEL (W108.019) parked at the side of the road and it was being sold for $3,500 obo. It had several spots of rust, most notably on the front fender seam where it meets the hood, and at the bottom of the wheel arches to the rear of the wheels. The strip of wood atop the dash where it meets the windshield was also rotting in a small spot on the passenger side.
I called the owner and he said he didn't know the true miles, but that the car runs pretty well. He said the heater is not working, but there are no other major issues.
The owner also said "it doesn't burn oil but it has to be refilled at about half way down". I hardly even realized he said it until afterwards, and I'm not entirely sure what he meant.
I have never owned a classic car before, but this is such a beauty that I just can't help but get excited about it. My question: Is $3,500 a reasonable price for this car, and does anyone have any advice about things to look for/questions to ask before purchasing this car?
Thanks in advance!
