breaks squeaking on '74 240d

My brakes on my car are squeaking when I press on the brake pedal, and the car stops quickly. Usually, when the brakes squeak, it means I need new brake pads, however, before I do that, I want to make sure this is the case for a car this old. Could it be something else? What can I check to see what is causing the squeak? Perhaps this is common for a car this old?

Take the wheels off and inspect the brakes. The pads need to be at least 1/4" thick and if not, replace them. There are thin shims between the pistons and the metal backing plate and there needs to be anti-squeal paste on the base plate. Yours may not have the thin shims, so check with your dealer or the EPC brake page for your car. You may be missing some parts.

You might need to replace the brake disks as well, if they are too thin.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

And if you replace the brake pads, buy ones with a groove in the middle.
