What are these things on my '68 w108?
I just inherited a 1968 250S from my father-in-law. I'm planning on fixing it up for my son, who won't be driving until next year. I think it will probably take me that long to get all the problems worked out, as I am not a mechanic. I am having fun learning about it ,though, and plan to make good use of this forum.
I've got the heater controls rebuilt and waiting on a verdict from the radiator shop about the heater core. Cleaned and updated the fuse box to copper fuses and got some minor electrical bugs worked out. While working on it I've noticed some things that I'm curious about, that'll probably be easy for you experienced guys to answer when you look at the attached pics.
Pic 1: Just above the coil there is a relay with a loose wire. What is this relay for? Is that loose black wire an issue? Also the little condenser looking thing next to the coil, whose wire is also not attached; what is it?
Pic 2: What are the little fusebox and silver relay just in front of the firewall on the left side? There's one 16 amp fuse in the box.
Pic 3: What are these sealed off hoses? The little vacuum hose with the screw plugging it leads back to the brake booster line. The big black hose with the plug in it seems to go back around to the breather. Shouldn't these be hooked up to something?
Pic 4: This doesn't look good. What is this little piston thing? It's under the front left side behind the radiator.
Thanks for any info you can give me. For having sat in the yard unstarted for 7 years, the car runs amazingly well. Runs and rides very smooth, no smoke, no vibration. Pretty ugly interior and dreadful paint job, but straight, solid body with very little rust.
