It's this possible?

Can I install my 1981 240D manual transmission engine on a 1976 240D with automatic transmission. My 1981 has a crapy body and a good engine, and this 1976 body looks much better but engine is not working and parts are all over the garage.
I appreciate your responses.

Only if they are the same chassis, ex W123. If they are, yes you can. If one is a W114 and the other W123, you will need some extra parts here and there.

I swapped the engine and trans (and a few other parts) from a W111 220SEb to a W111 220Sb. Everything fit perfectly.

Not part of the in-crowd since 1952. It's BRAKES not breaks. You break a bone, use brakes to stop your car. /rant

Are you only replacing the engine? Or engine + transmission?

If you are only replacing the engine, remember that you have to change the flywheel, that means that you have to match balance the replacement (automatic) flywheel.

And you'll need to transfer some linkage for the control of the automatic transmission.

Thanks Govert70227 and wbain for your wise advise. I believe tha chassis are different. The 1976 is the W115 and the 1981 is the W123. I would like to replace both, engine and manual transmission to the 1976. I hope is possible with some modifications. What do you guys think?

The oil filter housing of the W123-240D engine does not fit in the W115 chassis. Some people put the oil filter housing somewhere else and connect it to the engine with hoses.
