hard starting & leaking governor.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in when helping to get my non working 73 220d started.

Now i have realized that i have a leaking pneumatic governor and it smokes gray at idle. I plan to just buy a brand new/reman injection pump from germanstar and call it good. However in the mean time, is there anyway to reduce the smoking?

Also the car is hard to start, the glow plugs are new but do not seem to be getting as warm as they should, i looked at the wire that connects to the first one (old style) and saw some melted insulation, that could be the unwanted resistance probably?? Would a leaking pneumatic governor cause hard starting??

I have new nozzles, new filters, new glow plugs and goood fuel.
It starts hard but once its started, it has good power and runs fine with the exception of the smoking.

Thanks in advance for all the help and suggestions.

A leaking governor doesn't cause bad starting, because you pull the pump into the start position by means of the starter knob.

Isn't a new diesel pump is bit expensive?

Do some measurements with a multimeter on the glow plugs. That will tell you what the problem is.
