I just repaired all four of my clocks last night (spare dash, 1969 280S, 1972 280SE 3.5, 1970 300SEL 3.5) after reading this post and the links.

They all work great now......

Well, the dash came out easy (just wish it was as simple on modern cars - you should have seen the job it was to replace dash lights on my wife's 2002 Toyota Sienna) - the clock is actually held in place by two knurled nuts which are easy to remove - gently pull the dash and the speedo cable and there is just enough space to get a skinny hand back there to remove it - there is a spade male fitting which fits into a female power supply - took the back off and all looked fine. Manually moved the mechanism which provides spring and you will see the two contact points come apart - I cleaned all the inside with electrical spray cleaner and gave it a very light spray of light lube - put it back in to check if it was going to go and heard the tick of success!!! I think the points were just dirty and so was not able to make contact and work.

thank you, an easy fix!
