1971 220 lift pump leak - some info
I have a little info to pass on regarding the lift pump on the 1971 220D I have - I removed the pump as a whole and with some help from a friend removed the left hand side fitting (below the banjo fitting which screws into it) inside is a small rubber o ring which had deteriorated - I was able to get more help from another friend and find an o ring of similar size to go in there but this is only a temporary fix until the correct part arrives to replace.
I found this part number for the re-build kit: 001-586-12-07 (is is available from MB in California (El dorado hills) and is about $20 - the rubber seal is also available but I do not have the part number yet - when I pick it up on Friday I will post part number should anyone need one in the future. I would assume MB anywhere in the USA should be able to get this.
I think there are a number of different lift pumps and some may have a copper washer seal - in my case the fuel was clearly seeping out around the lower fitting as it was pushing past the perished seal inside.
2 10mm nuts hold the lift pump onto the engine block - you have to push it pretty firmly in to get it back on to push the rod back inside the pump. I think the other sizes needed are 19mm for the right hand top fitting and 22 for the bottom fitting into the pump. I replaced the hand pump with a bosch pump available at napa auto parts.
Hope this is of some help for the records and will post back with further info as I get it.
