Hi I have a 1978 300d with the large diameter loop style GP's. Mine still work the car just shakes like hell in the morning, Can i test the continuity or should i say the resistance of the plugs? Ive heard that the pencil style are far superior, are they? If so how much modification will I have to do to refit these new style? Will it be a chop and paste kind of job or is it a legitamate refit? Where should I buy the supplies? Are there cheap quality G/p's that are of the old style or am I forced to pay $50 apiece?

You measure the drop in voltage after each glow plug, there should be a 0.9 V difference for and after the glow plug. Continuity can also be tested, but if they work, continuity should be good.

Have a look around in the W123 subforum:

There are many threads about upgrading the glow plugs.

The upgrade isn't an official MB upgrade, but it is done quite frequently. It slightly reduces the volume of the pre chamber and therefore lowers the compression slightly, but that is about it.

I've seen the upgrade available but in general unless there is some significant flaw stick with the original design. You may need a new glow plug - or 5 but that's easy and the stock glow plugs have worked fine for 30 years (OK you probably replaced them over the years - but you see my point)

Just my $0.02 but I'd keep it stock.
