Replacing a headliner - dos and donts?

Finally got in the replacement headliner for my w115 240d w/ sunroof. Anyone have any experience with replacing this? Looking for any "gotchas" before I get started. This material was very expensive and I dont want to mess it up.

As always thanks ahead of time!

To do the job properly the front and rear windscreens need to be removed. You can try to tuck the liner under the gasket but I've never seen one done that way come out very good.

Windshield and rear window glass. The headliner tucks between the gaskets and the metal of the car body.

You wanted do's and don't's.....
Don't try this yourself, it's a PITA and not for the novice
Do let someone with the proper experience do the job, you'll be much happier.

The more I read about it the more I agree. I dont feel comfortable taking the windows out I dont think. Problem is I have called around and no one in town really feel comfortable doing it either. One upholstery shop said sure we will give it a try but didnt make me feel warm and fuzzy about it. I guess the dealership could do this but I am sure they will want my first born for it.

Regardless who does the work when it gets done and the windows come out are there any parts/materials that you would suggest replacing (dont plan on having the windows out again anytime soon)?

Thanks!

Just your first born? Such a deal! It'll help keeping the others in line. You watch, after this every time you go out to work on the car the remaining kids will go out of their way to be industrious and helpful.

Yeah, the sunroof puts a lot of upholsters off.

If you do pull the front and rear glass, replace the rubber seals. This will stop any current leaks and prevent new ones. Also, be prepared to repair any rust that may show itself once the glass and seals are removed.

Not sure how many choices there are where you live but I'd keep looking for an upholstery shop that knows this job and has done it. Often the upholster will call the auto glass shop and have them come out to your car - certainly they will work together or your upholster will do the windows himself (personally I'd prefer someone who partners with a glass shop).

You might ask your local MB dealer for a recommendation. I think they ought know who the top upholsters are in your area. Worth a phone call anyway.

Good Luck,
Frank

Go to the dealer and get both windshield seals and drive down to Coosa, Georgia and I will do it for you. I love that kind of work. I ONLY buy windshield seals from the dealer. The aftermarket ones never work right. By the way, where did you get the headliner?
