W108 - 280SEL A/C blower motor replacment
The blower motor in my 72 280SEL finally gave up the ghost after squeeling for about 3 months. After trying, unsuccessfully, to find a new one for quite a while, I decided this weekend to take a diferent route.
I purchased a new blower motor for a 1970 Ford Mustang. The part number is PM-351 and it cost me $17 from the local parts store (sitting on the shelf). It is a very common blower motor that was used in numerous GM and Ford vehicles from the 60's through the 80's.
The beautiful thing is that it is exactly the same size as the 280SEL blower motor. I pulled the housing, removed the wheel, and removed the motor and rubber grommets. I had to drill 2 new holes slighly closer in than the existing ones, reinstalled the grommets, sealed the original holes and installed the new motor in the same position as the old one. The wheel fits, the color coding on wires is the same (orange to orange, black to ground) and it still runs fine with the speed control in the dash. It also seals well in the original rubber seal into the wheel well.
It blows better than the original, is quiet and has all the functionality for only $17 and about 35 minutes of work. It also has a warranty.
