I refurbished and converted my A/C to R-134a a year ago. I had the same issue. I removed mine and installed a receiver/dryer from a mid 70's 450SEL. It fits on the right hand side of the condenser and works fine. The only modification was that I had to cut down the line exiting the condenser and re-flare it. I believe the original entered the top of the receiver and exited the bottom. On the 450SEL, it enters the side from below and exits the other side. While I was at it, I went ahead and had all new barrier hoses made, add a HI/LO cutout switch (to the receiver), and replaced the compressor. It cools well, even on hot days in Atlanta.
