Vacuum pump apart - no wonder not working!!! PIC
Well, I have the vacuum pump apart on the 1971 220D - i removed fan and radiator shroud and disconnected top hose to radiator and with a wriggle it came out leaving plenty of room to work on pump. I was going to remove the whole thing via the allen bolts but first decided to see if the top half would come off - the screws came out easy and immediately oil dripping from bottom - pulled the top off and this is what I found:
I have a couple of questions and a request: As you can see the backing plate is broken (and must have been for some time as the edges are worn smooth - I bought a diaphragm kit but does not come with this plate - anyone got an old one they want to sell/donate? Will pay shipping to CA (or know of a source).
Can I put this all back together without removing the main body of the pump?
If so, can I check working by turning over engine and seeing if rod moves in and out? Also, please go over pre-tensioning diaphragm with pump in situ - just need a bit more clarification on this. The other plate looks ok but I think the hole through which the screw goes looks worn - maybe due to screw vibrating back and forth?
Thank you lee
