this find was totally serendipity. my mother lives on vashon island, which is just a 15min ferry ride from downtown seattle, but a whole other world. i happen to know my way around the island a little, and my wife found a posting for it on craigslist. we ferried over immediately, talked them down $500 (LOL) and bought it for $1000. it's probably the best $1000 i've ever spent.
i just yanked the starter out, and it smells like a burnt clutch inside. it only spins one way only (which is a good sign) and the drive pops out by hand. i went to jumpstart it, but it turns out my jumper cables are so dang rusty i couldn't get a connection. it's probably safer that way, and it doesn't really matter because it's going to the rebuilder tomorrow anyway. hopefully it'll be done monday, but tuesday at the latest he said.
crawling around underneath, i noticed the tiniest little oil spot beneath the pan )-; it seems to be coming from the oil pan though, which isn't a huge deal. i like my leaks up top or down low, but not in the middle. or not at all.
and yes shepherds, it DOES get better by the minute;
rummaging through the trunk finally, which is packed to the brim, i found...
left&right front bumpers (in great shape too!), random pieces of replacement exterior trim, another 200 moniker, ANOTHER GRILL!!!!!, another headlamp/trimring, a reman brake drum&shoe, another pair of windshield wipers, various solenoids, unopened bags of MB brand weather seals, a few extra hub caps, most of the original jack assembly (it may all be in there), random extra interior pieces, and a can of (still liquid) touchup paint. there's more in there too, i'll have to take it all out and sort it tomorrow. the trunk is a veritable treasure chest, there are even some genuine sheepskin seat covers back there, and an oem looking trunk liner.
i hate to fluff my own feathers, but dang.... i scored bigtime.
