One does not "tip" a mechanic. If the job gets more involved discussing a change in fee is appropriate. I tip service providers at sit-down restaurants and at hair salons and I tip the guys who dry the cars at the car wash. If I hire day laborers (which I haven't done lately) I pay them more than others pay them and get them a good lunch. I do not tip at take out restaurants, or at sit-down restaurants where I order take-out. I think that is a total scam. Typically I do not tip at Jamba Juice. I do leave $5 or something for the maid in the hotel room. I tip the parking valet a couple bucks.
My sister tips furniture movers, which I think is insane. I don't mean day laborer furniture movers. I mean contract furniture movers.
I agree with the NZ guy - tipping is wacky. People should be paid a living wage.
