How much did you pay for the paint job, and how long ago was it? I had my BMW 735 painted and I paid a high price for it and got a perfect job.

I paid $300/panel which turned out to be $3800 including tip. Had a couple dents taken out, All glass was taken out, All the jambs were painted, and the far was sanded/buffed after being painted. Not sure about other areas but it should've been a ~$6000 paint job.

I don't like it. It more feels like bribing one guy to make sure that more attention is placed on your car. Result is less attention is placed on other peoples' cars even though they paid for the same thing. If it's above board with the boss/owner, why not just say I want to pay more and get more... Very different then compensating a service provider (maid) for cleaning the room.

You're right that it is different than tipping a maid but I see it as another, different, tool to get the job done. It doesn't mean other people's cars get less attention, the shop still does their "normal" job for everyone, but he just get extra attention because he made yourself stand out. It's not as if they spend exactly the same hours on each car, in which case that would be the case, but they likely just kept his car a bit longer to ensure the work was done better, and clearly also spent more time on it getting it perfect because more man hours were needed to accomplish the job, so he was, in reality, just paying in advance for the extra hours of work done that would have been overlooked otherwise.
