You stay 5-10 days, one time tip of $5 or $10 won't do it.
I knew where your point was going and I intentionally avoided it because I wasn't interested in a tipping debate. My point is that people who are on the bottom of the food chain deserve extra $$$ and depend on extra $$$, and mechanics are not in that category. And I do agree about daily tipping for the reason you stated.

Whole new can of worms, but I sometimes have maids who do not take the tip, thinking perhaps it's money I randomly left laying out (but to their credit and honesty). I generally need to scribe a note saying "thank you" with the tip placed on top. Is this how you handle tipping hotel maids?

I don't stay in hotels often, and when I do it is seldom for more than one night. I leave money when I depart in the morning.

The only concern I have with multiple night stays about leaving a single tip at the end is that sometimes different maids work on each day, so if I leave it all at once some of the other girls may get cheated out of their tip and one makes out like a bandit.

The only places I don't tip is , dry cleaners, grocery store, dept. store, doctor or dentist.Money greases the wheel, Mechanic, all inclusive resort, you betcha, $50 palmed in my hand to check in person gets me a beach front room rather than one overlooking the cesspool. The bartender gets $20 first time I meet him, next time he sees me he runs up to me with a ice cold cocktail and even if I've got half a glass left, there's a frosty replacement waiting, the staff(s) follow me around like I own the joint. You call it a tip, I call it a bribe. I always pay for what I want( and generally get it) Hell yes bribe mechanics. I even bribe my wife, don't you too?

Nope. I'm not in that economic circle. If I had all the money I thought I ever needed then I would do things like that, but I don't.

Don't get me wrong, it's not like I got money to burn, it's that at my age, I haven't figured out any way(yet) of taking a dime with me and if I don't spend my money on what the hell I want, someone else( wife and six kids) will spend it on shit I wouldn't buy in a hundred years, so if making my journey alittle easier and enjoyable cost me a couple of bucks so be it, side note, went on a vacation (with another couple) to a place in mexico, coming back took a cab from car rental return to airport, driver took us right to spot we were going, gave him $20, he asked if I wanted him to take our bags inside, it was like 1000 degrees out, I said sure, as the line was around the frickin building, he took all our crap to the front of the line! I couldn't believe it nor did I expect it. We didn't even have to go through customs leaving, people that got there an hour before us must of been pissed, blew right past them to the front and was first ones on the air conditioned plane, wasn't trying/expecting anything but it sure as hell was nice. It's only money and if I helped this guy, he also helped me, I try not to be "an ugly American" By the way my daughter lives in L.A. works at a place called The Palms.

If you mean the bar on Santa Monica Blvd, my sister used to occasionally drag me there when I was a bit younger...

As previously stated, I tip when they go above and beyond. Finding parts or doing extra work. If it was a big job or i think they did it perfectly or quickly. The mechanics make roughly $15-35 an hour. Most money goes towards the overhead.

When I dropped my w126 off to be painted i dropped $500 in the shop managers hand and said "make it perfect". Never seen such a perfect paintjob and i've got a great eye.
