w114 overheating. Gearing?

Hello I am a newbie here. I had a question concerning my new '75 280. Today I drove it long distance on the freeway for the first time. When I got home the temp gauge was just above the 210 faranheit mark. I took it for a drive again, and noticed the car feels overworked at 55+. I was wondering how these cars were geared and if they are good highway vehicles, and I was also wondering if overheating was a common issue for this model year. There is also a whirring that seems to be coming from the gearbox. Could it be my tranny?
