ATF for W114 1973 auto. trans.

What ATF grades are acceptable, will Type F work?

No, it was type A originally, but Dexron II or III is acceptable.

Type F is (older) Ford only.

Use Dex, as above! Three, four, five - forget what they're up to. But each is backwards compatible. I just did my '71 250C with Dex III last summer, first service since I got it, and have been doing my '82 300TDT with it every other for the past 12 years.

BTW - this is also what goes in your power steering reservoir - NOT "Power Steering" fluid! Though, it probably wouldn't hurt it if you did... Just saying.

For what it's worth I found my W114 250 and W115 220 seemed to be smoother with Shell ATF.

Pennzoil produced some hard shifts and audible clunks when shifting, especially into reverse.
